DA Bears!
Published on February 4, 2007 By anothermaso In Football
So I came late to American football. It was 1996 and we'd just gotten cable (hey, this IS the other side of the world, right?) and there it was in all its glory and Superbowl Sunday coincided with the Australia Day holiday (but not Australia Day itself) so we invited friends over to watch Dallas thump the bejesus out of Pittsburgh and I made Shake'NBake and chili dogs and we ate candy and cookies and popcorn and tried to play touch in half-time but our backyard was approx 4 foot square so we pretended to be cheerleaders instead....

And I loved it so much I picked a team next season. And I picked Chicago because I like the city (not that I've been to many places in the US). And they hadn't been to the Bowl in years. And they've been nowhere near it till today.

*sigh* and now my manager tells me I have to go to a FRGGIN MEETING right in the middle of the second half! Good thing I can call Mark and get him to record it for me. GRRRRRRR

But still, I'm gonna celebrate with a Wendy's hot dog for lunch. MMMMMMMM mystery meat......

This might be a crazy question but I am going to ask anyway. The Super Bowl is also known for the commercials. I wonder if you get to see the same ones we do.

Hey, maybe next year you could send some Aussie love to the Seattle Seahawks. They could use all the help they can get.

I usually leave Toni alone here. She gets annoyed enough by me 'offline' as it is. But I just had to say something. My team in the National Rugby Leagus is the Manly Seaeagles, which are kin to the Seahawks. So even if Toni doesn't send any Aussie love for your team, please know I am. I will have to talk to you about doing a Seaeagles for Seahawks tshirt swap.

First, Dallas is an abomination! Kind of like the anti-christ for normal folks!

Second, Chicago is DA Bears! as in Working class and all that.

Third Peyton Manning is part of a dynasty. His father was one of the best players in history, but played for a lousy team, so there is a sympathy factor there.

Fourth. Just love the game! And sorry for the interuption!

And finally, Maso, this is FOOTBALL! learn it, love it! be it! And dont worry about Toni. I think she knows that!

I don't care about either team this year so all it meant to me was having a hard time finding a truck stop parking place as all the drivers pulled off the road to watch the game.

Wendy's has hotdogs?

I am one American who doesn't watch football, much. I will if the Ohio State Buckeyes are playing the Michigan Wolverines...a long rival. But not much.

My son's friends are having a super bowl party. Pizza Hut, chips and salsa, pigs in a blanket..and root beer. heh. They are only 11!

Enjoy the game!

Ahh... the commercials.... NO WE DON'T GET THEM at least not on the free-to-air or Fox Sports channels but I'm hoping ESPN (recording as we speak) will have them. Otherwise I'll have to watch them online on the archive sites. We do ger the half-time show on cable (talking heads on the free-to-air)

Doc... my sub-headline (and my screams around the office) are echoing this cry... but I think we're down at half-time

That is a deal. I will have to find some cool attire for you guys. Hey, the seahawk/eagles need international love!

I'm not a football junkie, but I'm rooting for Da Bears too! I love the commercials! That's all I watch, and the half time show! Prince Rocked!

Unfortunately Da Bears losing right now!

OOps, sorry Toni, you didn't see the rest of the game yet!

Being from Texas I gotta say I've always been a Cowboys man, even gone to a few games live and in person. of course they'll never be the same without Tom Landry, Roger Staubach, Tony Dorsett, Bob Lilly, Don Meredith...

I go into the meeting and we're down 16-14 at half time - I come out and we've LOST by a BIG LOT. Oh well, I'll watch Prince at the half-time show when I go home.

Thanks Kelly and Serenity for your kind thoughts. Doc - I guess the Colts deserve a win after 30-some years!
Da-Bears for '08!

Doc,

Maso, this is FOOTBALL! learn it, love it! be it!

There are hundreds of thousands of League fans who will argue their game is the only Football, as will the Rugby Union supporters around the world.

To be quite honest with you, I don't follow the game much at all. I only support the Eagles out of a childhood alliegance. I would contend the only true football, the one real international game, aside from cricket, would be what you all call Soccer.

Go Manchester United!
