DA Bears!
Published on February 4, 2007 By anothermaso In Football
So I came late to American football. It was 1996 and we'd just gotten cable (hey, this IS the other side of the world, right?) and there it was in all its glory and Superbowl Sunday coincided with the Australia Day holiday (but not Australia Day itself) so we invited friends over to watch Dallas thump the bejesus out of Pittsburgh and I made Shake'NBake and chili dogs and we ate candy and cookies and popcorn and tried to play touch in half-time but our backyard was approx 4 foot square so we pretended to be cheerleaders instead....

And I loved it so much I picked a team next season. And I picked Chicago because I like the city (not that I've been to many places in the US). And they hadn't been to the Bowl in years. And they've been nowhere near it till today.

*sigh* and now my manager tells me I have to go to a FRGGIN MEETING right in the middle of the second half! Good thing I can call Mark and get him to record it for me. GRRRRRRR

But still, I'm gonna celebrate with a Wendy's hot dog for lunch. MMMMMMMM mystery meat......

I would contend the only true football, the one real international game, aside from cricket, would be what you all call Soccer.

I remember we would used to play soccer as training for our version of "football." Heh, and one thing about it! You can run run run your ass off playing that game! Tiring! And you gotta be IN SHAPE! I played six-man football which requires A LOT of running, but it doesn't compare to that in soccer.

Hoosier pride, man! The Windy City went DOWN!....lol!

Seriously, I love the city of Chicago, but I couldn't root for the Bears. I'm a native Hoosier, but rarely mention it unless Tony Stewart, John Mellencamp, or Peyton Manning are mentioned, and I'm married to a 'Sconsinite. You're not allowed to root for Chicago when your inlaws are all Green Bay fans!

Shovel,

I figure I can hijack this a litte... Man has to have some leeway when he shares this woman's bed, I guess (or maybe I should say I hope).

Anyway, I love the real football game. It is a great sport to watch and a lot of fun to play, even if you've got two left feet like me. And you're right, it is a game that requires stamina plus.

Being a huge Steelers fan I have to disagree with you. Dallas didn't "thump the bejesus out of Pittsburgh". The Cowboys did nothing in the second half of the game if it wasn't for Neil O'Donnell throwing 2 interceptions to Dallas when they were no Steelers' players around.(Sorry, just thinking back of bad memories LOL). I'm not mad at you, though. Any woman who likes football AND chili dogs is better damn cool to me.

Go Manchester United!

Aren't they owned by an American now?

From a corporate point of view, they might be 'owned' by an American, but try telling that to any Mancurian and see what they say. Does the word 'extreme pain' mean anything to you?

Being a Dallas Hater (and even grudgingly forgiven you for the robbed game in 72), I am embarrased you let them beat the tar out of you!

Beckham any one?

There are hundreds of thousands of League fans who will argue their game is the only Football

I'll put my hand up for this I am relishing the opportunity to catch my beloved Brisbane Broncos take on St Helens in the WCC. Only downside is they are playing in Bolton (!), so a bit of a hike for me from London. Was hoping to catch a Man U game as well but they travel that weekend.

And just in tonight's football, uh soccer, I caught the Socceroos play atrociously against Denmark. Though to be fair I think the ref grew up in Copenhagen, seriously 2 goals disallowed?

Darth Silliness,

The only defence I can offer for the Socceroos (as I didn't see the game itself) is that they fielded a team of benchwarmers, as most of their star players were not available (as in playing the money games instead).

beloved Brisbane Broncos

You and my father would get on well. Bloody Broncos supporters
